Dear Dr. Stillwell
I am updating you, because you represent my riding in the B.C. legislature. I assume that you have the possibility of helping resolve this issue of the posting of propaganda type ads on Translink and similar government related enterprises (I know they are "independent" - e.g. B.C. Ferries ...). On behalf of the community at large, it would be appreciated if you could take up this issue and let Translink know at the disgust that exists in being drawn into a political piece of hateful propaganda. Not that it is totally pertinent, but as I mention below, picking the time of the upcoming Jewish High Holidays was a common practice of hatemongers and worse in the days of the Aktion murders of Jews and others by the Nazi Germans and their associates.

Dear Ian
The problem is that the material is hateful - allowing false contra material on Translink assets - would be akin to that old saying "The only good Indian is a dead Indian"..History (Canadian, American) shows that to be a common claim ... we have moved far beyond that - would Translink take an ad that reminded all that one of the reasons for lack of progress in the treaty process is that Indians indeed did have their lands usurped ... put up a series of maps like the Palestinian ones, and is there a difference ...I can think of many other pertinent analogies
I bet you saw a number of movies with that line..
I am making a ridiculous comparison - someone in your corporation has taken propaganda and allowed it to take down the reputation of Canada via Translink. These series of ads are being reported far afield as a shameful tactic against Jew haters - even though Israel itself is less than 80 per cent "Jewish" including 20 per cent Arab (Muslin and Christian)
So, this sneaky, hateful ad, is saying that best Israeli is an Israeli that lets sovereign nations first invade, and then say no no to any peace treaties in Khartoum (after the '67) war ....implying that Israel (which was part of what was legitimately called Palesting prior to 1948) as a nation that took away lands - there is no peace treaty between Palestinian representatives, which includes terrorists who were called the PLO and still encompass terrorist groups .
Yes the ads are all subtle, sneaky - but your corporation has been sucked into a mire of hateful lies.... Palestine was the name of the country - at the time of the UN resolution which certified a two state solution - with Jerusalem as an international city belonging in essence to both parties, that deal has been denied to this very day
But not by Israel ....there was a status quo, until 1967 - until the surrounding Arab countries invaded Israel for a second time .... that is why the West Bank of what was Trans Jordan is now often called the West Bank ..it resulted because TranJordan was foolish enough to join other Arab countries in that invasion
It's the West bank of the Jordan River and its predecessor country -
Transjordan - now Jordan has finally signed a peace treaty - recognizing Israel ...
You have allowed a provocative, piece of sneaky advertising to slip through a net of someone's incorrect interpretation of a Supreme Court decision ...it's wrong and will remain wrong until those ads are removed ... because they aren't ads. They are hate messages.
Note: There is a clear relationship connected to the posting of these ads during the upcoming 10 days of the High Jewish Holidays ... read the history - see Schindler's List and a bevy of other examples..... the Nazi Germans usually picked these same days to start specific Aktions and mass killings.
That is part of this program, no doubt .... that is part of the inherent message you so easily have avoided. Now Translink has allowed a storm to erupt ... think again - give the haters their money back. The Jewish community and the community at large do not need hate ads that are pure propaganda.
Your intentions may be in line with the law - but the spirit of law or common sense seems to have escaped someone's notice.... I would ask that you rethink this whole situation and nip the problem in the bud. If it is allowed to continue, the prediction is that there will be much more of this - using corporations like Translink as its tool.
Yours
Bernie Davis

Dialogue regarding Tranlink acceptance of “Palestine” hateful advertisements

August 29, 2013
Dear Bernie,
I am writing in response to your message of concern regarding an advertisement that is currently displayed on portions of our transit system. TransLink does not endorse nor advocate any position put forward by outside advertisers. In addition, as a public agency, TransLink's advertising policy cannot violate freedom of expression under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Freedom of expression is a protected right under the Charter.
TransLink does not have the legal authority to deny ads as long as the ads comply with the Code of Canadian Advertising Standards, other laws such as the Human Rights Act and TransLink's Advertising Policy. This is in accordance with a 2009 Supreme Court of Canada decision that struck down the portion of TransLink's Advertising Policy that prohibited advocacy ads.
In 2009, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that TransLink’s previous advertising policy, which prohibited advocacy advertising, violated the Charter (Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority v. Canadian Federation of Students – British Columbia Component). TransLink subsequently revised its advertising policy to remove the restriction against advocacy advertising. Lamar Advertising is the agency that runs and places advertisements on TransLink and InTransitBC systems.
Prior to this particular advertisement’s placement on the transit system, Lamar referred it to the Canadian Advertising Standards office for review. As a reassurance, TransLink also sought third-party legal opinion of this advertisement with regard to the Canadian Charter other applicable law and our advertising policy. This information is meant to provide you with context and the basis for our approach. It is not intended in any way to diminish the magnitude of the issue and the individual impact.
Sincerely, Ian Jarvis
CEO, TransLink
